The longest short film Festival in Spain will also show a retrospective section about The Cisjordania Wall and the Montpellier Film Festival, from may, the 15th to may, the 26th
The american actress Faye Dunaway and the italian director Tonino Valerii will be receiving the ‘Almería, tierra de cine’, 2007, Special Tribute award, given by the Short Film Festival ‘Almeria en corto’, organized by the Diputación Provincial of Almería, in the south of Spain.
The name of the winners were announced last april, the 26th, by José Añez, president of this andalucian institution, during the official act of presentation of the 6th edittion of the International Short Film Festival ‘Almería en Corto’, that will take place from may, the15 to may, the 26th.
“Maybe you would remain one of these pictures, with an actress standing up at the door of a wooden house, with her lost sight, and an undoubtedly hollywoodian expression... I´m talking about Faye Dunaway”. José Añez used this words to introduce the unforgetable actress who played ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, and who came to Almería to film ‘Doc’, at the beginning of the seventies. Faye Dunaway will come back again to Almería three days before travelling to Cannes, on may, the 24th.
About Tonino Valerii, José Añez said ‘we are talking about one of the main directors of the best period of the italian cinema. He was Sergio Leone´s disciple and, as a director, we worked with actors like Henry Fonda, Lee Van Cleef, Telly Savalas, Franco Nero or Bud Spencer".
Valerii came to Almería for the first time as an assistant director on the Sergio Leone´s film ‘For a few dollars more’. But this area was so special in his life that he even decided to spend his honeymoon in Almería.
Later, he came back to this land to film part of his four different films: ‘For the taste of killing’, ‘Day of anger, ‘A reason to live, a reason to die’, and ‘The price of power’. This last film will be shown during the Festival in Almería.
Óscar de Julián, 'Almería en Corto'´s director, pointed out the increase of short films for the competitive sections, as well as the strict process of selection: 446 short films have been presented to the International section and only 37 have been selected. Just 28 from 217 for the national video section. “Our proporsal is that the audience becomes used to the short fims and this will happen only if they enjoy a good short film session”, De Julian said.
Last year, ‘Almería en Corto’ performed a new section for the first time. It was called ‘World XXI’, and it was about different social and political issues in the whole world. Last year it was dedicated to South America and it worked very well. According to Oscar de Julian,“This year, this section is about one of the key issues of the modern world: the conflict between palestinian and israeli people, something that starts to seem the neverending conflict. The tittle is ‘The Cisjordanian Wall’. Israeli and palestinian film directors will give their vission of the situation throught their films, althought this Festival will show an american film, called ‘West Bank Story’, another point of view from an ironic perspective”.
Other of the main sections of this 6th edition, will be a 14 films selection, coming from the wellknown Internacional Mediterranean Film Festival of Montpellier. Most of them have been awarded and they come from the nearby Mediterraneo, the Balcans, Middle West or the Magreb.
Diputacion Provincial of Almería president, José Añez, has remarked the premiere of the western ‘Limoncello’, filmed last march in Almeria, that will be shown during the official Opening of the Festival. This short film has been directed by Jorge Dorado, Luiso Berdejo and Borja Cobeaga (nominated to the 2007 oscars for ‘Éramos pocos’),
