Rules and regulations

The 6th International Short Film Festival "Almería en corto" will take place in Almería (Spain) from Tuesday, May 15 through Saturday, May 26, 2007. The Festival is organized by the County Council of Almería.

International Short Film Competition

All domestically or internationally produced short films (films less than 60 minutes in length) shall be considered for competition provided they are in 35mm or 16 mm format. The production date must be after January 1, 2006.

Conditions for entry

  1. All producers or directors who own the rights to the film they are submitting are eligible for international short film competition.
  2. Each filmmaker or producer may submit as many films as desired. Each film submitted must be accompanied by an entry form and shipped on a separate tape or reel.
  3. The films will be screened in their original languages. If the language is not Spanish (Castilian), the original script and a translation to Spanish or English must be included.
  4. The films submitted must be produced after January 1, 2006. Films selected in previous “Almeria en corto” festivals will not be admitted.

Selected films will be screened exclusively in either 35mm or 16 mm format and use optical sound only.

Entry form

In order to enter, a copy of the film must be sent on video VHS (PAL or NTSC) or DVD Zone 2, and accompanied by a completed entry form before the March 2, 2007 deadline. Submissions will be accepted provided that they are postmarked March 2, 2007, as long as the name of the film and the director are sent by fax to the number: +34 91 561 14 34. The sent material must arrive within 7 calendar days.

All entry forms (annex 1) must include the following:

  • Two digital photographs (300 ppp jpg) taken from the film.
  • Synopsis (3 line maximum).
  • The bio-filmography of the director(s) and/or production company (5 line maximum).
  • A digital photograph (300 ppp jpg) of the director(s).
  • A copy of the original script of the short films and a translation into Spanish or English (mandatory).

All this documentation is mandatory in order to participate in the international short film competition.

The organization assumes that the individual or group submitting the work holds all the copyright and other exhibition rights for the material submitted, in addition to authorization to receive the prize, should the work have several authors. Under no circumstances shall the organization accept any responsibility that might arise due to the infraction of this clause.

Selection

A Selection Committee composed of media professionals and members of the organizational staff will select the films to be screened at the festival from among all the films received. The decisions shall be announced no earlier than April 5, 2007. Selected films must be sent in 35mm or 16 mm format before May 2, 2007 to:

Participants authorize the organization to use extracts from the films for promotional purposes in any form of media. Likewise, photographs from the film can be used as advertising in the press and other media as well as for use in the Festival catalogue. The information sent for the selection of films will possibly appear in the festival’s advertising and promotions unless it is requested not to within a maximum of ten days after the selection.

Selected films will also have to be accompanied by a copy of the work in Betacam SP or digital format. The Festival reserves the right to make a copy of the film. The film will not be screened without the express consent of the author/s.

Awards

A jury (made up of professionals from the fields of cinema, art, and culture, along with members of the organization who will have a say but not a vote) will choose the winners from among all the films officially selected for competition.

  • First Prize for best short film, to be awarded 18,000 € and a trophy.
  • Second Prize from the Unicaja Foundation, to be awarded 10,000 € and a trophy.
  • Audience Award for best short film, to be awarded 5,000 € and a trophy.
  • RTVA Award for Andalusian Audiovisual Creation (in partnership with Caja San Fernando), to be awarded 3,000 € and a trophy. This award includes the purchase of three years of nonexclusive broadcasting rights by RTVA and the rights to a DVD version to be distributed free of charge. The jury for this award will be made up of professionals designated by RTVA and the Festival Organization.
  • Cecilio Paniagua Award for Best Cinematography, to be awarded 2,000 € and a trophy.
  • Award for Best Screenplay, to be awarded 2,000 €, and a trophy.
  • Award for Best Performance, to be awarded 2,000 € and a trophy.
  • Western Award for Best National Production, to be awarded 15,000 € and a trophy. This award will be given to the producer of the winning film, to be used to shoot a short film in Almería within a year of receiving the award and must fall within the genre of the Western. A copy of the film will be granted to the County Council of Almería, who reserves the rights to use it for promotional purposes, and the film’s premiere will take place at the seventh edition of the Festival. 50% of the award will be granted upon presentation of the screenplay, which must be submitted before November 15, 2007; 25% of the award will be granted at the start of the shooting; and the remaining part when the copy is provided to the County Council of Almería, and is premiered at the seventh edition of the Festival.
  • Special Mentions (maximum of 2), without any monetary award.

One person/film may be awarded multiple prizes.

The copies of the films awarded monetary prizes, with the exception of those only winning the RTVA award for Best Andalucian audiovisual creation, the award for Best Cinematography, the award for Best Performance, the award for Best Screenplay, will become the property of the film archives of the County Council of Almería, who will inform the producers of all the ways in which it is used, and will always use the work in a cultural and nonprofit manner.

In all cases, the awards will be paid through bank transfer.

All prizes are subject to all applicable tax laws. The award winners must provide a photocopy of their National Tax Number (N.I.F.), as a prior requirement for the bank transfer.

These awards, with the exceptions of the award for Best Cinematography, the award for Best Performance, and the award for Best Screenplay, will be granted to the person or production company whose name appears on the Entry Form.

Shipping and return of films

Shipping expenses are the responsibility of the participants. Any filmed received that is not in its original format will not be admitted.

VHS or DVD videos for selection will not be returned and will become part of the archive of the festival.

Films are insured against loss or damage by the Festival from the time they are received until they are returned. Should a copy of the film be destroyed or lost, responsibility of the Festival will be limited to the cost of a replacement copy of the film, according to the rates in the laboratories for a standard copy at the time it occurs.

Copies on 35 mm, 16 mm or BETACAM SP can be picked up at the festival, or, upon prior request, will be shipped to a return address at no expense.

Acceptance of rules

Participation in the 6th International Short Film Festival “Almeria en corto” implies the acceptance of all the terms and conditions listed above as well as the resolution of any problem not stated herein by the organization.
